Ich war ja mit Rent a Coder ganz zufrieden. Allerdings geht mir die Webseite und die dämlichen E-Mails der Rent-A-Coder Mitarbeiter wahnsinnig auf die Nerven. Deshalb habe ich jetzt mal Elance ausprobiert.
Ergebnis: Schöner, aber auch teurer. Ich denke, ich werde auch mal Guru.com ausprobieren.
Nach insgesamt 17 Ausschreibungen und einem Knappen duzend beendeten Projekten scheinen alle seiten mit Rent-A-Coder zufrieden zu sen:
Our (you see I have a new job) products have an EAN-13 as GUID printed on as an barcode. GUIDs (in this case on a per product basis, not on an per individual item basis) are a good thin. The issue is: we need finer granulatity.
Consider an jumping rope. We change tha packaging to include a french, italian and spanish descriptive text besides the german one. We can’t assign the intaniationalized product a new EAN code because this would mean that our existing customer all had to enter this EAN into ther systems resulting of considerable work for them. So the EAN has to stay the same.
But how to ensure that the french customer gets the new multilingual product? We can’t use the EAN in our warehouse, because it dosn’t destinguish themmultilingual from the older batch.
So for an automatic warehouse management system we need some other marking besides the EAN. If we use another barcode people will get confused on which barcode to scan. We would need something barcodish but different. Enter 2D barcodes – they do the same thing like traditional barcodes but are hrd to confuse – aren’t they?
And then there is semacode – a standard (?) to encode URLs in the so called Datamatrix variant of 2D Barcodes. An then there are Datamatrix decoders for camera phones. Photograph a barcode with your camera phone and you get a webpage – displayed on your mobile. See this if you don’t get the concept.
So instead of putting (another) boring number on a product why not put the actual URL of a page describing that product on the packages? And that’s exactly what we are going to do.
To enable that we started by implementing datamatrix barcode generation in Python. The module is called huBarcode an you can get it at http://www.hosted-projects.com/trac/hudora/public/wiki/huBarcode
Wo das mit Rent-a-Coder so schön geklappt hatte, versuch ich’s gleich nochmal:

Üblicherweise klappt es ja beim zweiten mal nicht so gut wie beim ersten Mal. Ich bin gespannt.
Nachdem ich mit diversen Versuchen bisher keinen Erfolg hatte, einen externen Programmmierer zu finden, habe ich vor einiger Zeit Rent-a-Coder ausprobiert.
Bei Rent-A-Coder stellt man eine Projektbeschreibung ein. und dann können Programmierer auf dieses Projekt bieten. Die Meinungen über Rent-a-Coder gehen sehr auseinander.
Wie waren meine Erfahrungen? Fast gut. Die Webseite von Rent-A-Coder (ROC) ist hässlich und unübersichtlich. Die Mitarbeiter von ROC haben fake Namen, sind scheinbar oftmals bots, haben wenig Ahnung von Software und können nur mäßig Englisch.
Ein Teil der Gebote war von Leuten, die scheinbar nicht mal die komplette Projektbeschreibung gelesen hatten.
Ein Teil der Gebote war allerdings sehr attraktiv. Die Preisspanne der ernstzunehmenden Gebote reichte dann von 500 bis zu 1200 U$. Ich habe den Programmierer für 500 US$ gewählt. Aber nicht (primär) wegen des Preises, sondern, weil er schon funktionierenden Code hatte und aus Brünn kam – und ich bilde mir ein, dass die Zusammenarbeit mit Leuten vom gleichen Kontinent einfacher ist, als von Übersee.
Mit dem Ergebnis bin ich sehr zufrieden. Der Programmierer, Martin Sarfy, hat deutlich mehr abgeliefert, als gefordert und war sehr Bemüht, nicht nur die Spezifikation zu erfüllen, sondern auch mein Barcode Problem zu lösen.
Wie heisst es eBay immer: “Gerne wieder”.
