Major Upgrade

Sunday, February 8th, 2004

This server now received an major OS upgrade (FreeBSD 5.1-somewhat-current to FreeBSD 5.2-RELASE) and we hope this will solve the stability problems. If not we have to start exchanging memory chips etc.

DNS attacks. they can cost you money

Monday, December 1st, 2003

I suffered from a DNS attack on xmsg.net a domain I grabbed a while ago. After changing the DNS to 141.1.1.1 (the one from C&W) the attack seemed to stop after some days. Probably a really stupid script-kiddie who started doing DNS querys on xmsg.net

I did not notice it until I got the bill of my ISP. +3 GB Traffic. I checked with my ipchains/iptables based monitoring (ipacsum) and I did not monitor UDP/DNS traffic but in sum the traffic growth was huge. Only while looking through the tcpdump stream I noticed DNS querys for AAAA on xmsg.net. This was bullshit, I did not have any valid stuff on that DNS zone for my domain. Of course the script kiddie did use distributed name servers, even the company where my employee has machines hosted was used to abuse my DNS server.

Afterall, I have to setup an automatic alarm if the traffic raises. QoS on some protocolls would be nice to.

Downtime at beebop

Tuesday, August 12th, 2003

Beebop was unusable tonight. While it was still routing and pingable no services where accessible but every connection attempt resulted in a timeout.

I suspect that it was a problematic OS update (anyone tried that?) or the out of filedescriptor bug bites again.
